He served as Chair of the Department of Physiological Science for 15 years and Executive Associate Dean of the College for 6 years prior to his retirement from the University of Florida. Dr. Harvey is a recognized expert in comparative hematology, having published 200 journal articles and book chapters. Notable first-time discoveries include an infectious disease of dog platelets named Anaplasma platys and inherited methemoglobin reductase, phosphofructokinase, and flavin adenine dinucleotide erythrocyte deficiencies. He is author of “Veterinary Hematology. A Diagnostic Guide and Color Atlas,” and coeditor of “Clinical Biochemistry of Domestic Animals, 6th edition.” Past awards and honors that Dr. Harvey has received include the Alumni Recognition Award from the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the Award for Outstanding Contribution to Animal Clinical Chemistry, Division of Animal Clinical Chemistry, American Association for Clinical Chemistry, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology, the Heiner Sommer Prize for Lifetime Contributions in the Field of Animal Clinical Pathology from the International Society for Animal Clinical Pathology, the Mark L. Morris, Sr, Lifetime Achievement Award from Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Inc, the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Pathology Hall of Fame Award and the University Medallion – University of Florida, in appreciation of 40 years of service.

Research Profile

Areas of research interest and publications have included erythrocyte metabolism of domestic animals, Heinz body hemolytic anemias, serum haptoglobin alterations in disease states, iron deficiency anemia, methemoglobinemias, myeloproliferative and lymphoproliferative disorders, developmental hematology and iron metabolism in foals, hematology and iron metabolism of pregnant mares, and infectious agents of blood cells. Infectious agents studied include Mycoplasma haemofelis, Cytauxzoon felis, Anaplasma platys, Ehrlichia canis, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Babesia canis and Leishmania donovani.

A longstanding area of interest is inherited defects of erythrocyte metabolism in domestic animals. Publications have resulted from in depth studies of clinical cases of pyruvate kinase deficiency in dogs, methemoglobin reductase deficiency in dogs and cats, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in horses, and flavin adenine dinucleotide deficiency in horses. Extensive experimental studies have been conducted on erythrocytes and muscles from adult and neonatal phosphofructokinase-deficient dogs. A new area of study focuses on the clinical chemistry and hematology of Florida manatees.
