About Darcy B Adin

Hi! My name is Dr. Darcy Adin. I am a board-certified veterinary cardiologist at the Small Animal Hospital at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine where I work as a clinician and also as the Chief Medical Officer. I treat all animals with heart disease, and I am especially passionate about improving the lives of dogs living with degenerative mitral valve disease and congestive heart failure. My areas of interest and clinical research focus on improving our understanding of heart failure so we can optimize medical treatments for pets affected with this common disease. I also serve as the Director of the Open-Heart Surgery Program at the Small Animal Hospital, which through the expertise of Dr. Katsuhiro Matsuura provides surgical treatment to repair the mitral valve of dogs affected with degenerative mitral valve disease.

Teaching Philosophy
I believe in a multifaceted teaching approach to solidify important principles for success in clinical practice while simultaneously laying the foundation for success on necessary board examinations. This involves hands on learning (e.g. making sure my students hear heart murmurs on their patients), evidenced-based learning (e.g. looking up published studies to guide treatment choices), and clinically oriented rounds learning (e.g. discussing real-life case scenarios and the spectrum of ways to handle them depending on the situation). In each of the clinical or classroom settings and regardless of whether I am teaching students or veterinary residents, I try to create a safe environment where questions are invited and critical thinking is encouraged. I strive to instill a love of learning in my students and residents so that they embrace a life-long learning approach to veterinary medicine.

Research Profile

My research is focused on the goal of improving the lives of pets living with heart disease through clinical discovery. To this end and with the collaboration of other researchers, I have reported on aspects such as refining the use of diuretics for heart failure treatment, the role of the kidney as it relates to heart disease, understanding factors that influence neurohormonal systems such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system in heart disease, and improving our understanding of refractory heart failure so treatments can be effectively targeted to abnormalities. I am especially interested in elucidating the effect of electrolyte disturbances on disease progression and determining if we can intervene medically to improve outcomes. Heart disease is very common in dogs and cats, and while we have many new exciting medical and surgical options available, it is important that we continue clinical research efforts to better understand and treat pets with heart disease.

Areas of Interest
  • Evaluation of the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone system
  • Nutritionally mediated Dilated Cardiomyopathy
  • Optimization of diuretic therapy for congestive heart failure
