The late Dr. Charles E. Bild, a veterinarian from Miami, devoted more than 44 years to improving the welfare of animals and enhancing the veterinary medical profession. After graduation from Iowa State, he moved to Miami where he ran his own animal hospital. He was known for old-fashioned dedication. It was not unusual fro him to respond to pre-dawn emergency calls to care for an ailing or injured pet. Research was an integral part of his clinical work, leading him into studies of cancer and cardiovascular disease. He published more than 20 papers on heartworm surgery, blood transfusions, shock and special orthopedic and clinical problems. Widely sought as a consultant, Dr. Bild provided advisory services to Dr. Robert Boucek, professor of medicine at the University of Miami and senior investigator in cardiovascular research for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and to the Cordis Corp., which manufactures human heart pacemakers. He also served as first vice-president and a director of the Papanicolaou Cancer Research Institute in Miami. He worked diligently on behalf of his profession, serving as a program planner and participant in numerous scientific meetings. Colleagues describe Dr. Bild as a man of wit and warmth who "activated and energized the people he met during his life." The American Animal Hospital Association named his the outstanding veterinary practitioner in 1968. In 1976, the association voted to rename that award in his honor. A past president of the Florida Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Bild was named Florida's most outstanding veterinarian in 1964 and in 1972 received the first Lifetime Award for Distinguished Service from the association. He also received services awards from veterinary medical colleges at the University of Georgia, Iowa State and Auburn. ***************** "My conversations with the students and faculty about
the practice of veterinary medicine in the real world were most rewarding,
and perhaps the most significant part of my contribution to the CVM." "By building bridges between practitioner and university,
by demystifying the whole referral process, and by establishing personal
relationships between individual practitioners and clinicians, an environment
is created whereby both parties can derive mutual benefit while achieving
the best result for the sick animal."
An example of the esteem in which Dr. Bild was held is shown in this orchid, the Phalaenopsis Charles Bild. The orchid was named in Bild's honor by Jones and Scully, Inc. and was officially registered with the Royal Horticultural Society of England. |
CHARLIE BILD'S FRIENDS, INC.
The College of Veterinary Medicine has established a program to honor the memory of Dr. Bild while providing unique learning experiences for students, staff and practitioners. Known as the VIP Chair (Very Important Practitioner), the program brings selected veterinary practitioners to the college's Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for one-to-three-month visits. The VIP veterinarians work closely with college staff and students and are of particular benefit to undergraduates facing the transition to professional practice. Drawing on their experiences in the profession, the practitioners give lectures on such topics as ethics, practice management, public demands of professionals, and effective communications. At the same time, they are able to advance in their own clinical fields and gain teaching and learning opportunities through hospital and clinical rounds, faculty and student seminars, continuing education courses and conferences at the University of Florida Health Science Center. The VIP program was the first of its kind in the nation, and has become a model for use in colleges of veterinary medicine throughout the country. A fund has been established through the University of Florida Foundation, Inc., for Charlie Bild's Friends, Inc., a corporation not for profit organized by Florida law (charter number 746850). Contributions are tax deductible and will be used exclusively for the VIP Program. Further information about this unique program that has enriched the lives of faculty, students, and "VIP" practitioners from around the world is available from the following:
