Farrier Service
At the UFVMC the majority of the cases we encounter require a joint effort between the farrier service and the large animal surgery service. This partnership allows the farrier to work hand in hand with Board Certified specialists to provide indepth analysis of your horses condition. This team approach uses our range of abilities and diagnostic equipment to identify and treat many conditions ranging from general hoof problems such as quarter cracks and abscesses to laminitis and fractures. Our primary goal is to treat the horses disease effectiely and completely and therefore provide top quality and integrated foot care for our clients and referring veterinarians.
When identifying a lameness or hoof problem the following diagnostic tools are available:
*In-Depth Lameness Exams
*Gait Analysis/High Speed Treadmill - Click here for information on the treadmill!
*Nerve Blocks
*Digital Radiography
*Scintigraphy
*Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
The farrier service also promotes excellence in podiatry by teaching students the integral role of the veterinarian in patient care. This process better prepares our graduates for their future interactions with farriers and allows them to have a better understanding of hoof care and the importance of a team approach.
Once a diagnosis has been made by the veterinarian/farrier/student team and a plan of treatment has been established, students are involved in the shoeing process. Students are able to build on the knowledge of the farrier to better understand treatment methods and shoeing techniques. Students can follow cases as they return to the UFVMC for follow-up shoeings and can see the horse’s progress and grasp the vital importance farriers play in the comprehensive therapeutic plan.
