Hofmann Equine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (ENICU)
In 1982, the college became the first in the world to establish the discipline of equine neonatology in a unique partnership between faculty specialists and human neonatologists at the UF Health Science Center. The equine neonatal intensive care unit at UF has since become a model for veterinary colleges nationwide. For over 23 years, the Hofmann Equine Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida has been dedicated to the care and recovery of young horses.
The Hofmann ENICU is the only unit in Florida where foals are cared for by a board-certified specialist in internal medicine 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and has board-certified specialists and consultants in 11 separate disciplines including internal medicine, surgery, theriogenology, anesthesiology, radiology, neurology, cardiology, clinical pathology, dermatology, ophthalmology and pathology. In addition, the UFVMC has fully trained technical staff dedicated exclusively to the care of foals and their dams around the clock.
