What to expect when you visit the Large Animal Hospital...

Regular business hours (8 a.m. to 5 p.m. M-F)
After business hours (Between 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. M-F, Weekends & Holidays)

Drive up to the automatic green gates and stop the front of your vehicle over the yellow line – this will trigger the gate to open and allow you to enter.

AFTER HOURS drive up to the automatic green gates and stop at the yellow line. To the left of the gate is a yellow box with a phone in it that will ring the technician on duty. That technician will open the gate and allow you to enter after you identify yourself and your reason for needing access.

Drive through the gates quickly – do not follow another vehicle without stopping your vehicle over the yellow line as the gate is timed and only allows for one vehicle to enter or exit at a time. If you follow another vehicle it may close on you causing damage to your vehicle and possibly you or your animal. Keeping security tight and the animals protected is a top priority.

Pull into the yard and park your trailer so that the patient can be unloaded on the gravel path or at the elevated chute – whichever is appropriate for your situation.

BEFORE UNLOADING… please check in at the front office which is located through the glass doors in the building with the green roof and painted horse in front of it. Front office staff will collect information on the patient including all pertinent patient records, radiographs or coggins you should bring with you for the visit.

BEFORE UNLOADING AFTER HOURS… if the technician has not met you in the yard please go to the front office which is located through the glass doors in the building with the green roof and the painted horse in front of it. The technician will meet you there as soon as they can.

The technician will collect the information on the patient including all pertinent patient records, radiographs or coggins you should bring with you for the visit. The technician will assist in unloading your animal and will direct you to the appropriate barn. A technician will be called and will assist in unloading your animal and directing you to the appropriate barn.

A student will take any additional history and perform an initial physical exam. The Faculty Clinician will then review the entire history and examination process with the student and determine the clinical impression and plan for the patient. This is a valuable learning experience for tomorrow’s veterinarians.

The Clinician will go over the plan of treatment with the owner or authorized representative of the owner. At the same time a cost estimate* will be prepared based on the projected course of treatment.

Surgical cases will be admitted to the hospital one day prior to surgery for evaluation and will remain at the hospital at least one day post surgery. Longer stays will be at the Clinicians discretion. Medicine (including Foal Unit), Reproduction, Ophthalmology and Pain Management cases will be evaluated by the Clinician upon arrival to determine the length of stay.

*Please note this will be an "estimate" for the treatment projected. Once care has begun the cost of treatment is subject to revision as the treatment plan is revised. Individual responses to treatment vary greatly depending on many factors and may require multiple revisions. Revised estimates for care may need to be given verbally should circumstances require.
