Veterinary Extension
The goal of veterinary extension is outreach and education by providing animal health leadership and information resources to Florida's various commodity groups, the private sector, county extension faculty, and university faculty.
Aquatic Animal Health
The mission of Aquatic Animal Health is to provide sustainable state of the art training, education, clinical, diagnostic and research support for aquatic animals, both wild and under the care of man. We work in partnership with other University of Florida programs, private groups, oceanaria, industry, researchers, local, state and federal stakeholders as well as other educational institutions.
Beef Veterinary Extension
The mission for Beef Cattle Veterinary Extension is to take the University of Florida to the beef producers of the state. The four areas of the program's focus are extension, research, teaching, and consulting. The focus on extension involves working with beef cattle producers on subjects which are critical to them and producing educational presentations and publications. Research in beef cattle extension involves production economics as well as animal health and welfare. Dr. Max Irsik is the faculty coordinator for these programs. Dr. Irsik consults with cattle producers on specific health, management, and economic issued affecting their operations.
Dairy Veterinary Extension
The objective of the Veterinary Extension Program for Dairy Cattle is to provide educational leadership and assistance to the Florida Dairy Industry in matters related to health and health management of dairy cattle. The target audience includes Florida dairy farmers, managers, employees, agri-business, practicing veterinarians, hoof trimmers, and all other allied industry affiliates. Specific areas of emphasis include: the management of lameness and foot care of dairy cattle, the development of training programs for multi-cultural dairy employees, and the continued improvement of animal well-being in livestock production. Dr. Jan Shearer is the faculty coordinator for these programs.
Equine Veterinary Extension
The goal of equine veterinary extension is to establish educational programs which serve the needs of the equine industry in Florida and promote the health and welfare of the horse. Equine veterinary extension serves as a liaison between the University of Florida's veterinary community, the horse industry in Florida, horse owners, and county extension faculty. Equine veterinary extension also encompasses consulting about equine health and disease, teaching the University of Florida's veterinary and pre-veterinary students, and promoting, performing, and disseminating information on equine research. Dr. Amanda House is the faculty coordinator for these programs.
Poultry Veterinary Extension
Poultry veterinary extension provides technical support, education, and research programs to the Florida poultry industry and related avian industries. Activities include on farm visitations, poultry necropsy and sample evaluations (histopathology and serology), consultations, and publications. Efforts have been directed toward improving vaccination programs, teaching disease monitoring techniques, and promoting disease containment procedures. Educational programs are directed at promoting a better understanding of poultry disease prevention and control. Dr. Gary Butcher is the faculty coordinator for these programs.
