Academic Policies
Student performance will be evaluated by subjective and objective methods, including examinations given by the various teaching units throughout the curriculum and subjective evaluations prepared by the members of the faculty. Subjective evaluations will cover all aspects required for successful performance in the field of veterinary medicine including such skills as: interpersonal relations, communicative skills, behavior and conduct with animals, clients, faculty, students and staff. In addition, the student will be expected to adhere to the provisions of the Veterinary Medical Practice Act of the State of Florida, as set forth by the Department of Preprofessional Regulation.
Students meeting all the following criteria will be advanced to the next semester or to degree candidacy as appropriate in the curriculum.
1. Satisfactory completion, with a passing or satisfactory grade, of all courses required to that point in the curriculum, including core and elective clerkships for advancement to degree candidacy.
2. Maintenance of a 2.0 or greater grade point average on veterinary curriculum courses to date (cumulative) and for the semester just completed.
3. Satisfactory evaluation on subjective criteria.
4. Satisfactory evaluation on readiness to practice; only required for advancement to degree candidacy.
5. Not currently on probation.
The academic performance of those students who do not meet the criteria stated above will be reviewed by the Academic Advancement Committee after each semester, or more often if required. The Committee will recommend an action (continuation without probation, continuation with probation, no advancement or dismissal) to the Dean. The Dean will decide upon the appropriate action for each student and will notify the student of his or her decision. A student has a right to appeal the Dean's decision in writing to the Dean within fourteen (14) calendar days after receiving written notification. The appeal process will conform to current procedures of the University of Florida. In such appeals the decision of the Dean shall be final on all matters involving academic performance or academic progress.
Academic Honesty
The College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Florida, expects students to be honest in all of their class work. Therefore, students are required to commit themselves to academic honesty by signing the following statement as part of the admissions process, and again each semester on their academic advisement card.
"I understand that the University of Florida expects its students to be honest in all of their academic work. I agree to adhere to this commitment to academic honesty, and understand that my failure to comply with this commitment may result in disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion from the University."
This statement serves to remind students of the obligation they assume as students in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Matters of violations of academic honesty are adjudicated by the Health Center Student Conduct Standards Committee.
