Honors and Awards:

Grinter Fellowship and Named Presidential Fellowship, College of Veterinary Medicine, 2004
AAAS/Science Program for Excellence in Science one-year sponsored membership, 2007
The Bonde/Reep Award for Manatee Conservation, Florida Marine Mammal Health Conference, St. Augustine, FL, 2008

Current Research:

My graduate work has focused on the genetics of the threatened Sirenia Order, including cytogenetics, and population and conservation genetics. Specifically, my work has included chromosome mapping of the Florida manatee using human Zoo-Fluorescence in-situ hybridization probes, comparison of dugong (Dugong Dugon) and Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) microsatellite primers to improve population genetic techniques, and fine-scale genetic analysis of the Belize and Puerto Rico manatee (T. m. manatus) populations. The degree of relatedness among Belize, Puerto Rico, Florida, and other Antillean manatee populations will be assessed to determine dispersal and migration patterns. This work will benefit future management and conservation decisions for the preservation of the West Indian manatee.

Laboratory Experience:
  • DNA/RNA isolation
  • PCR
  • cloning
  • blood and tissue cell culture
  • karyotype construction
  • fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH)
  • BAC preparations
