Current Research:
Investigation into the molecular responses of mammalian respiratory epithelial cells following exposure to low, moderate and high doses of brevetoxin. Neoplastic and adenovirus-transformed ‘normal’ human respiratory epithelial cell lines are used as models for the potential effects in humans and marine mammals. The goal is to establish if DNA damage, mutagenesis, apoptosis, necrosis and cell cycle alterations can potentially occur following acute and sub-acute exposure of respiratory epithelium to brevetoxin concentrations that often occur during red tide events, and compare the responses of ‘normal’ respiratory epithelial cells to those seen in epithelial cells derived from individuals with respiratory compromise.
Laboratory Experience:
- Cell culture
- DNA extraction and purification
- Gel electrophoresis
- PCR
- ELISA
- DNA damage detection assays
- Apoptosis/Cell death detection assays
- Flow Cytometry
- UF ICBR lab (Molecular Cloning and Protein Chemistry), 2006
