Teaching/Research/Service Interests:
Teaching:
My teaching activities range from teaching DVM students, virology, epidemiology, emerging diseases, and career opportunities to developing web based instruction on the recognition of foreign animal diseases for veterinarians involved with the State Agricultural Response Team network. I teach the Transboundary Disease distance learning course for the University of Edinburgh’s MSc in International Animal Health. I am closely involved in the development of the joint DVM/MPH degree course at the University of Florida.
Research:
My career has focused on the epidemiology and control of emerging viral diseases and their relationship to human and wildlife populations. Working as one of a team, recent research has focused on the evaluation of a recombinant vaccine to protect horses from West Nile infections and the discovery of canine influenza. Previous research investigated the epidemiology of African swine fever, pseudorabies, and arthropod transmitted viral diseases, such as bluetongue and equine encephalitis.
Service:
I provide policy advice on emerging viral diseases to government departments and companies within the USA and around the world. From 1995 until 1999, I held the position of Director of the University of Florida's International Center.
