Residency Program
The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida was founded in 1969, accepted its Charter Class in 1976, and occupied the Veterinary Medical Center in 1978. The College is located on the main campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville . The Veterinary Medical Center provides diagnostic and treatment facilities for a wide spectrum of animal diseases.
The residency program is designed to provide a solid base for future career development in academic and specialty practice of veterinary medicine.
The specific objective of the residency is to expose the graduate veterinarian to a selected subspecialty of veterinary medicine. A two-year certificate program constitutes the basic residency in many clinical areas. However, three-year programs are required in most specialties. At the conclusion of the program the resident is expected to be able to submit credentials to sit for specialty board certification in the appropriate specialty college.
Clinical skills will be built through direct hands-on experience, didactic course-work, teaching of professional students, and participation in rounds, seminars, and emergency clinics. The University of Florida is committed to the development of both clinical and academic excellence; thus, about 75% of the resident's time is spent in the clinics and the remainder is devoted to self-development. As in most advanced training programs, a considerable degree of initiative is left to the individual. The benefit the resident derives from the program will therefore be directly related to the effort expended.
General prerequisites are: graduation from a college of veterinary medicine, good health, and capacity for long hours. For most specialty programs, one year of an approved rotating internship is required. Equivalent experience in private practice or military veterinary medicine is also considered. Application is made to Chair, Residency Committee, Box 100105, College of Veteirnary Medicine, University of Florida , Gainesville FL , 32610-0105.
