I am currently assigned to the 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), based at Ft. Bragg, Fayetteville NC. I've been in Afghanistan supporting Operation Enduring Freedom IX for the last four months. Our normal rotation is seven months long, and coincidentally, we'll be replaced by 7th SFG(A), whose vet is none other than Christian Hofer (UFCVM '05). Small world. My basic mission over here is to support Special Forces operations. The teams of Special Forces ("Green Berets") are responsible for training Afghanistan National Army forces, facilitating projects to build Afghani infrastructure, and disrupting Taliban efforts. Periodically, a team will work with Afghani medical personnel to provide care to towns & villages in need. My role is to work with local vets or paravets to provide preventive medicine (vaccination and deworming) to livestock - mostly sheep & goats, quite a few cattle, and even some camels. My work here has taken me to all points of the compass, from the Red Desert in the south to the Hindu Kush mountains in the north. Fortunately, I haven't seen the worst that Afghanistan has to offer (Foot & Mouth, Anthrax, Peste de Petits Ruminants), but I'd like to think that it's partly due to our efforts here. We had a nice warm trend a couple of weeks ago, resulting in some herds with grass staggers, but other than that, it's fairly rudimentary medicine. The payoff comes when we drink chai tea with the elders and they tell us just how important their livestock are to them (the average farmer's annual income is less than $500). The more long-term goal is to aid in reestablishing the nation's veterinary infrastructure. Both of Afghanistan's veterinary schools were destroyed during the Soviet occupation, but one (or both, I'm not sure) are back up & operating now. We ensure that local providers are adequately trained and equipped, in order to be credible in the eyes of the local populace. Thanks, Jon WINTERNITZ, DIANA - 2000 Westfield Veterinary Group and Wellness Center in Westfield, N.J. “I am working at a large small animal practice in New Jersey, and it is a great practice with great people and clients. Eric and I got married on June10th, 2006. My married and professional name is now Diana Fellen. |
